Barnsley Road Club

Back in 1924 a small group of cyclists met together first in the Manor Castle Inn and then in a shed behind Caffrey’s Bike shop on Doncaster Road. Together they formed our club and 100 years later we are still going strong, as Barnsley’s oldest and largest cycling club.

Back in those days we were strictly a road club and our first run saw members visit Goole and back in March 1924. Through the years our members participated in local time trials, hill climbs and road races but the a focus has always been the club runs on a Sunday. At the start there were about 20 original members, one of whom was William Miles who was the father of our longest serving members George Miles and his sister Barbara, still a link back to the very start of our club.

Come and join us this year as we celebrate our centenary. We are running a number of events to commemorate some of the rides that club members have participated in through the years and we would love to see you there. Please contact us if you want more information.

Our first event was a club ride once again out to Goole, riding in the tread marks of our forefathers! But keep coming back for more news on events we are holding through the year and also look out for our commemorative shirts, designed to celebrate the styles and colours of kits of our past.

Barnsley Road Club has been promoting cycling in our town for the past 100 years, we are a passionate club with members at our core. As an inclusive club we are represented at all levels by children, women and men. Although traditional road club rides are at the heart of what we do, we run cyclocross, track races, time trials and midweek gravel rides.
We would love you to join us as we cycle into the future in the years to come.
